During a lunch breakout session, I found myself in the company of other dedicated kids pastors and directors. Among them was Brother Jim Wideman, a man who can only be described as the grandpa of kids ministry. His knowledge and experience in the field were like an overflowing fountain, quenching our thirst for wisdom and understanding. Brother Jim shared a wealth of information, answering our burning questions and providing much-needed guidance. But one statement he made still echoes in my mind: "Everyone needs a coach." These words led me to a crucial question that I now want to pass on to you: "Why do you need a coach in kids ministry?" We all know the story of Jesus, how he spent three years developing a small group of people who would go on to share His good news globally. Imagine if Peter had walked away from his boat to follow Jesus and then went off to do his ministry alone, with nobody to learn from or to bounce ideas off. Thankfully, that's not what happened. Like Peter, we should be willing to be mentored and coached. In the realm of kids ministry, having a coach is vital. This person can provide fresh ideas, understand what you're going through, and help you learn from their experience. Coaching in ministry can take many forms. It could be online, in a cohort, or one-on-one. You could find someone you look up to in kids ministry and learn from them specifically. Regardless of the form it takes, having a coach to speak into your life is crucial. Let me challenge you: You need a coach. You need someone who knows what's going on in kids ministry and can help you beyond just filling a spot in the nursery. It is vital for your ministry's development and for your personal growth. Remember, keep your kids ministry fresh. This is Pastor Tony, reminding you of the importance of coaching in ministry, and sharing with you the benefits of having a coach in kids ministry.
